Since 2002, eThekwini municipality has installed over 80 000 urine diversion (UD) double vault toilets at the household level in rural areas.

A number of concerns arose over the removal of faecal material from UD toilets.
The eThekwini municipality’s water and sanitation unit (EWS), began exploring methods for the efficient removal and disposal or processing of the UD contents.

A low costing housing project was completed in siyanda township near durban a few years ago. High levels of non-payment in this area is a concern to EWS.

A debt relief programme was designed by EWS to address high levels of non-payment by providing debt relief to indigent customers such as siyanda township residents, and develop a culture of payment for water services among residents.
