Sustainable Development

NATURE

These projects aim to promote and implement sustainable living within communities.
Other objectives include:

The management of resources such as water, soil and biodiversity in a sustainable way
Increasing livelihood opportunities
Reducing vulnerability of communities

PROJECTS INCLUDE

Development of water harvesting systems for capture and use of rainwater and greywater
Sustainable water irrigation systems such as ram pumps, gravity feed and the use of swales and berms
Support and development of community farms and household gardens including the promotion of organic farming practices and permaculture
Development of household and community biogas systems to simultaneously address sanitation, organic fertiliser production and energy requirements of communities and organisations
Identification and development of market linkages and opportunities for community business operations

MODE OF DELIVERY

Delivery is based on a balance between sound project management and community participation processes.  Key strategic elements include:

Sweat equity is critical in ensuring community ownership and eliminating a dependency mentality
Building of relationships between like minded groups will increase learning opportunities
Mentoring greatly increases the “bedding down” of knowledge and the conversion to practise
Establishment of evaluation criteria at the onset of the project greatly assists the ongoing evaluation requirements
