Sustainable Development

These projects aim to promote and implement sustainable living within communities.
Other objectives include:

•	The management of resources such as water, soil and biodiversity in a sustainable way
•	Increasing livelihood opportunities
•	Reducing vulnerability of communities

PROJECTS INCLUDE

•	Development of water harvesting systems for capture and use of rainwater and greywater
•	Sustainable water irrigation systems such as ram pumps, gravity feed and the use of swales and berms
•	Support and development of community farms and household gardens including the promotion of organic farming practices and permaculture
•	Development of household and community biogas systems to simultaneously address sanitation, organic fertiliser production and energy requirements of communities and organisations
•	Identification and development of market linkages and opportunities for community business operations

MODE OF DELIVERY

Delivery is based on a balance between sound project management and community participation processes. Key strategic elements include:

•	Sweat equity is critical in ensuring community ownership and eliminating a dependency mentality
•	Building of relationships between like minded groups will increase learning opportunities
•	Mentoring greatly increases the “bedding down” of knowledge and the conversion to practise
•	Establishment of evaluation criteria at the onset of the project greatly assists the ongoing evaluation requirements
